In winter of 1981 or 1982, we were coming out of hole in Oklahoma and it was cold, we racked our pipe on razorbacks and did not have any problems. Rumor had it that 10 men were killed that night on different rigs due to stacking pipe on meat board, and ice plugs forming, then shooting out after pipe was run in hole, one fellow on a H&P rig had a few fingers severed when hit by a plug.

83 was cold. Froze the lake over for a week. Drilling north of Abilene, #1 pump went down. Had been circulating #2 through the hopper. Derrickhand swapped valves, kicked it in and revved it up. Blew the surge chamber 30-40 foot in the air. Landed about 3 feet away from him, 4" hammer union cracked in two. Popoff froze solid.

Winter of '80-'81 in Evanston WY and we were running pipe after morning tour pulled a bit trip.  In their desire to hurry up the trip, they didn't break the razor backs loose from the ice and ended up racking the pipe directly on the floor sills.  About 1/2 way in on a 15000 trip we ran into the ice plugs that had formed in the pipe.  The first two weren't much but that third one was a doozy.  I had just thrown the 5th wrap of chain around the tool joint when I heard this whistling noise and out of the pipe came shooting this plug that must have been 3-4 ft in length.   A chunk of it hit the derrickhand in the upper part of his chest under his left arm as he way laying out the next stand to be latched.  The remainder ricocheted off the crown sheaves and landed out past the end of the catwalk.  Needless to say we kept plenty of steam on the floor the rest of the trip to make sure there weren't anymore of those plugs encountered the rest of the way in....

Derrickhand was dinged up pretty good, but he finished out the trip and the tour.  Didn't miss any days either.  Tough SOB.

Some of the coldest days in my life were in Evanston...

thats pretty common here in ND. And it really sucks. Especially when your operator just throws the brake handle in the air and drops the string in. But that never happens on a service rig........EVER
